April 7-15, 2006 - The Merchant of Venice Set in 16th century Venice, this is one of Shakepeare's darkest comedies. The romantic story of a young man who has squandered his fortune and must borrow money to woo the wealthy lady he loves is set against the more disturbing story of the Jewish moneylender Shylock and his demand for the "pound of flesh" owed him by a Venetian merchant who has fallen into his debt. Here pathos and farce combine with moral complexity and romantic entanglement to display the extraordinary power and range of Shakespeare at his best.

June 9-11 Little Rock Producer of the 48 Hour Film Project. Tthe 48 Hour Film Project will take place here in Little Rock on the weekend of June 9-11. The 48 Hour Film Project is the largest timed filmmaking competition in the world, and Little Rock is the smallest city by FAR to compete. Last year was the first year. We had 31 teams sign up, 27 make it to the "kick off" and 23 make it through the weekend. Please visit the website at www.48hourfilm.com. Its alot of fun, and after 48 hours, you have a finished movie that hundreds of people will see. Last year's winner, "Tidbits of Joy" screened last weekend at Cinequest, and has actually made it into several film festivals, including Tribeca, where it will screen at the end of April. The grand prizes are fantastic, and I plan to have local prizes as well this year. Call 501-247-0125. weirdsunitego@hotmail.com

June 20-21 YouthCAN! is pleased to announce that it is now enrolling for the Summer Art Explosion, to run June 20 through July 21, 2006. The Summer Art Explosion is a five week summer camp taught by professional artists. Creative experiences are provided for youth ages 10-18 through exposure to many different mediums including batiking, sculpture, pottery, painting, jewelry making, stained glass, dance, drama, and many others. Youth are encouraged to try new things, experiment with the materials, reach inside th emselves and find that creativity that is present in us all. The program runs Tuesday - Friday at the Art Explosions Community Imagination Studio in Springdale. The program allows youth to experience art in all its messiness, but also provides for other experiences. Field trips this year will include a photography trip to Beaver Lake where we will also have the opportunity to swim, and a yearly trip to Terra Studios to inspire us! This year, we are also having a Family Night weekly. Each Friday, parents are encouraged to come and do art with their child. We will finish the summer on July 22 with the End of Summer Celebration, an art show and sale with performances by the youth, to celebrate our summer accomplishments. This year’s Summer Art Explosion program is being funded through the C ommunity Development Block Grant fr om the City of Fayetteville. The camp runs Tuesdays through Fridays from 1-5pm. Costs are based on income ranging from $25 to $75 for the entire 5 weeks of fun! This includes snacks daily, field trips, t-shirts, and transportation to and fr om the program if needed. To receive more information or to request a registration packet, please call (479) 927-2020 or (479) 725-2456. Or you may email your request to bdavis@youthcaninc.org.
